Disasters strike anytime, anywhere. Every year, millions of Americans, including physicians, face disaster and its terrifying consequences. The AMA Foundation recognizes the need to provide timely disaster relief grants to physicians - helping them restore their medical practices quickly so that continuity of health care is not lost in their patient communities.
Through the Health Care Recovery Fund, the AMA Foundation provides grants of up to $2,500 to physicians in FEMA-declared disaster areas to help them rebuild or restore their damaged medical practices in that declared disaster area.
To date, the AMA Foundation has provided grants totaling $728,500 to 321 physicians across Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas for a number of disasters.
Established in 2005 in response to Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma, the program provided Gulf Coast physicians much needed financial aid. These initial grants were funded by the AMA Foundation as well as supported by generous contributions from the AMA, the Flight Attendant Medical Research Institute, state and specialty medical societies and individual donors.
How to donate
The AMA Foundation is currently accepting donations to the Health Care Recovery Fund to provide as many relief grants as possible for future disasters. This is an ongoing fund that will be re-activated and available to physicians as determined by the AMA Foundation.
